5 Shocking Truths About Your Drinking Water (And What You Can Do About It)

Most of us don't think twice about turning on the faucet. We assume the water flowing into our homes is clean, safe, and healthy. After all, it's been treated, tested, and approved — right?

The reality is far more unsettling. From cancer-causing chlorine byproducts to "forever chemicals" that accumulate in your body for decades, the water in your home may be silently undermining your health — even if you're using a filter or buying bottled water.

Here are five truths about your drinking water that most people never hear about — and what you can actually do to fix it.

Truth #1: Chlorine-Treated Tap Water Creates Cancer-Causing Byproducts

The water flowing into your home almost certainly comes from a municipal wastewater treatment plant. After solids are removed and the water is processed, it's treated with chlorine to kill germs and bacteria. The process includes machines that sift out undigested solids — from paper towels to wet wipes to toilet paper — before the water is chemically treated and recirculated back into the supply.

But here's the problem: when chlorine mixes with even the smallest amounts of organic matter (which is almost always present in water), it creates harmful compounds called disinfection byproducts (DBPs) — including trihalomethanes and chloramines.

These compounds are carcinogenic. Cancer-causing.

In the small town of Roseto, Pennsylvania, after switching from mountain spring water to chlorinated tap water, the population went from zero heart attacks to experiencing them regularly — with no other changes in diet or lifestyle.

A 2008 study of 400,000 babies in Taiwan found that pregnant women who drank chlorinated water had a higher risk of children with heart defects, cleft palates, and brain abnormalities. Other research links chlorine byproducts to the skyrocketing rise in asthma and food allergies worldwide.

Truth #2: "Forever Chemicals" Are in Your Water — And There's No Legal Limit

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of more than 4,000 synthetic chemicals that have been used since the 1950s in everything from nonstick cookware to stain-resistant clothing to food packaging. They're called "forever chemicals" because they don't break down — not in the environment, and not in your body.

They accumulate over time and have been linked to:

Truth #3: Most Water Filters Are Actually Breeding Grounds for Bacteria

So you bought a filter. Problem solved, right? Not exactly.

Traditional water filtration comes in three basic forms, and all three share a disturbing secret: they can become breeding grounds for the very bacteria they're supposed to remove.

Even with UV or ozone treatment added to these systems, the dead bacteria remain in the water — and can actually become food for new bacterial growth. The filter that's supposed to protect your family may be making the problem worse.

Truth #4: Reverse Osmosis Strips the Good Stuff — And Can Breed Fungus

Reverse osmosis (RO) has been marketed as the gold standard for water purification. And yes, it does remove contaminants by forcing water through microscopic pores. But here's what the marketing doesn't tell you:
